Schloss Plüschow
Nordwestmecklenburg
Plüschow Palace was built in 1763 by the Hamburg merchant Phillip Heinrich von Stenglin. In 1802, Frederick Louis, Hereditary Prince of Mecklenburg, acquired the palace and its estates, which remained in the possession of the grand ducal family until 1945. The delicate Rococo stucco ceilings still bear witness to the palace’s once-lavish furnishings. The palace underwent a complete renovation between 1991 and 2002. With its spacious rooms and tranquil location, the palace offers ideal conditions for use as an artists’ residence. It is managed by the Förderkreis Schloss Plüschow e.V., founded in 1990, which set itself the task of providing a living space with studios, workshops, and exhibition rooms amidst the historic architecture. Two rooms on the ground floor document the castle’s eventful history up to the present day.

The Miracle of Plüschow – A Lost Landscape Room Returns Home
An extraordinary find returns to its place of origin: a large fragment of an 18th-century Baroque wall hanging—long hidden, now saved.
Shortly after 1990, an observant construction worker discovered the piece beneath paper wallpaper in a building adjacent to Plüschow Palace. For over thirty years, his descendants carefully preserved the precious textile before handing it over to the Förderkreis Schloss Plüschow e.V. in 2023.
The colorful fragment depicts a magnificent fantasy landscape in which elements of Italian, French, and German cultural landscapes merge into a unique pictorial space—featuring lush trees, exotic plants, and figures in vibrant robes.
Following extensive restoration, the piece is now on permanent display in the exhibition spaces of the Mecklenburg Artists’ House at Plüschow Castle—a rare testament to Mecklenburg’s cultural history in dialogue with contemporary art.
