Between 1913 and 1915, Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI had a new palace built on Lake Zierker, a restrainedly elegant country house in the Neoclassical style based on designs by Ministerialrat Paul Schondorf. The clearly structured building, with its side and central risalits, blended into an east-facing English-style park, whose mature trees lent the ensemble a special atmosphere. Nearby, stables and residential buildings for the staff were constructed, also designed in the style of the palace. After the Grand Duke’s death in 1918, the estate passed to his mother, Grand Duchess Elisabeth, and has since retained the tranquil character of a residence that served its original purpose for only a few years. In 2025, the Grand Ducal Palace reopened as a castle hotel with its own gourmet kitchen.
