The Renaissance-style Mellenthin moated castle is a historic estate dating back to 1575 and is located in the heart of the Usedom Island Nature Park. “Mellenthin” comes from the Slavic language and means “center.” And that is exactly where Mellenthin Water Castle is located—right in the center of the island of Usedom. The castle consists of a two-story main building with two single-story side wings that enclose the courtyard
. Inside the castle, the elaborately designed entrance hall, whose ceiling is supported by a column, is particularly impressive. The eye-catcher here is a magnificent fireplace with rich Renaissance ornamentation. In the 19th century, the Mellenthin estates were sold at forced auction, and the owners changed frequently until the dissolution of the estate district in 1928. After 1945, the castle was used as a kindergarten, administrative office, and residential space. In 2001, the Fidora family acquired the building and opened a hotel with a restaurant, café, coffee roastery, brewery, and distillery. There is much to discover here.
