The castle was designed by Theodor Krüger (1818–1885), a colleague of Conrad Wilhelm Hase, the founder of the Neo-Gothic style in Hanover. After designing his first manor houses in Moltzow, Marxhagen, and Harmshagen, he created his most significant work with St. Paul’s Church in Schwerin.
In 1905, Cavalry Captain Rudolph Probst briefly took over the castle, followed by Paul von Eschenburg, who sold it to Ernst Gehrke in 1937. After the war ended in 1945, the estate was expropriated; it served temporarily as a Soviet administrative office and subsequently for a variety of public uses, ranging from refugee housing to a school and kindergarten to an agricultural cooperative kitchen. After 1990, the castle passed to the municipality via the Treuhand, to the Kaltenbacher family in 1994, and in 2022 to the current owners, who are carefully restoring the complex. The estate includes the manor house, an ice cellar, a fieldstone barn from 1831, a coach house, and a park. Dedicated new owners are now carefully renovating it. Dogs are allowed in the park.
