Rittergut Streu
Vorpommern-Rügen
The Streu estate, a designated historic site, had been owned by various noble families since the late 13th century until the former knight’s estate passed into the ownership of the Volckmann family in 1899. During the “Third Reich,” Streu served as a meeting place for the military resistance against Hitler and the Nazi regime. Despite being recognized as a “victim of fascism,” Hans Volckmann was expropriated in 1945. Afterward, the estate was used to house refugees. As part of land reform, the property was divided among new farmers, who joined together in 1961 to form the “Einheit” Streu agricultural cooperative. During the GDR era, the estate fell into visible disrepair despite continued agricultural use. This process accelerated after 1990 due to vacancy and vandalism. In 2001, Gisa and Hans-Peter Reimann acquired the dilapidated estate complex along with parts of the park and renovated the complex—which today contains five individual monuments—in the years that followed. The property is now used for residential purposes and as a veterinary practice.
