Herrenhaus Bauer
Vorpommern-Greifswald
In 1836, the Greifswald merchant Moritz Voss acquired the two estates, Bauer and Wehrland, which were separated by a stream. In 1838–39, the new owner had the Bauer manor house—which still stands today—built away from the farmyard, modeled after the ideal of a Neoclassical country house as defined by David Gilly, and had a landscape park laid out. The architect is believed to be Carl August Menzel of Greifswald, a former associate of Schinkel. The two-story plastered building with a gently sloping roof is divided by robust cornices between the stories. The central façade is accentuated by a three-axis central risalit with a triangular pediment. Access to the building is organized by a linden tree-lined avenue and a roundabout. In 1867, Voss sold the Bauer-Wehrland estate to the von Quistorp family, who were already managing the estate in the neighboring village of Krenzow. The Bauer estate remained in their possession until its expropriation in 1945. The building then became the property of the municipality and was converted into a community center with various uses. In 1998, Prof. Dr. Hans-Gert Roloff and architect Klaus Berge, along with his family, acquired the Bauer manor house and the accompanying park grounds. Through a gradual, careful restoration, the historic building was returned to its original Neoclassical structure. Today, the house serves as the family’s private residence. Guests can take a break from everyday life in the nearby coach house. A visit to the small village church of St. Nikolai in Bauer, within sight of the manor house, is also highly recommended. Behind the church, one is treated to a magnificent view of the Achterwasser lagoon and the island of Usedom.
