A little gem on the Peene River: Located between Anklam, Greifswald, and the island of Usedom, right next to the Peenetal River Landscape Nature Park, lies the over 450-year-old Quilow moated castle. Built in 1575, it is now one of the few surviving Renaissance manor houses in Western Pomerania and is considered a monument of national significance. Anyone expecting a “landlord’s ambiance” in the style of a supposedly good old time is in for a surprise. Following the concept of “transparent historic preservation,” parts of the castle showcase uses and designs from several centuries side by side and layered on top of one another. Old scars and attempts to heal them are still visible. Thus, the castle itself becomes an exhibit while also offering inspiring spaces for workshops, art, and much more.
