Gut Streithof
Vorpommern-Greifswald
The Streithof manor house on the Randow Plateau lies at the foot of the Streithofer Alps, a short distance from the village of Glasow in the rolling hills of Pomerania, just 20 kilometers from the outskirts of Szczecin. The Randow Plateau is enclosed by the glacial valley—where the Randow now flows as a mere trickle—and the Oder River.
“No one who traverses the Randow Valley can help but be struck by the impression that it constitutes an actual riverbed, a left tributary that branched off from the present-day Oder… thousands of years ago. The banks of the Randow Valley, which is about 2 kilometers wide in some places, are bounded by sharply defined, moderate elevations. The fact that this was once a river branch is supported not only by its outward appearance but also by the circumstance that the Randow Valley contains peat everywhere, at times 30 feet deep. These peat deposits naturally presuppose the former presence of vast quantities of water.” From “Burgwälle des Randowthals” by Hugo Schumann, practicing physician in Löcknitz, 1886
The Streithof manor house has been a beloved vacation home for 25 years in spring, summer, fall & winter—a large family of wonderful women spanning three generations brings the manor house and garden to life.
Since January 2024, the approximately 160-year-old manor house has been undergoing comprehensive energy-efficient renovation and restoration. The impressive fieldstone barn is a typical example of the fieldstone buildings found at the mouth of the Oder. It too has been preserved and is scheduled for restoration in the coming years. Until June 30, 1939,
Streithof was a knight’s estate with many privileges. After the war, 146 people lived in the house, attic, and basement. Even today, visitors who once lived in the manor house still drop by from time to time. During the GDR era, the house was used as an apartment by several families and was remodeled several times for this purpose. Claudia-Maria Humeniuk,
her mother, and her sisters’ dream for Streithof: “Good morning, you beauty!”—the Streithof Workshops.
“Based on the idea of cultural heritage surrounding the old estates, now that most of the children are grown, we want to create various workshop spaces for traditional crafts in Pomerania. The manor house will continue to be used privately and by our guests. To weather Pomerania’s dark nights during the cold, stormy months, we’re building a Nordic sauna outside and an Arab bath in the vaulted cellar. And of course, there will also be a small wine bar in the entryway,” says Claudia-Maria Humeniuk, looking forward to conversations with the guests of the MittsommerRemise.
