Schlossgut Dargibell
A baroque castle is saved.
One of the few mansions that, like Sanssouci Palace, can be counted among the examples of Frederick the Great’s Rococo style.
The small estate of Schlossgut Dargibell is located just 5 km from Anklam, the gateway to the island of Usedom and the “Amazon of the North”—the Peene River—in Western Pomerania. The manor house is one of the most significant historical monuments in the “Grafenwinkel” region of Western Pomerania.
The Baroque building with English-style interior design dates back to the 17th century. Count Otto Martin von Schwerin, known for the legendary Battle of Hohen Friedberg in 1745, acquired the estate on July 30, 1761. The current form of the stucco façade dates to the third construction phase from 1890 to 1902. The elaborately designed dormers with wooden ornamentation, as well as the design of the gables featuring coats of arms, date from this construction phase.
The exceptionally grand Hall of Mirrors, with access to the terrace and the English Park, reveals the full elegance of that era. The design of the ceiling and walls, with their figurative, playful execution, reflects the “Frederician Rococo” style. A mirror pyramid dome, expanding upward and arranged in perspective, adorns the center of the ceiling and is reminiscent of Sanssouci Palace. An association founded by Fedor and Pola is dedicated to and is working on the preservation of the building. Extensive work in the park and protective measures inside the house have begun. A colorful array of art, culture, and concerts is already taking place.
