Food for the Soul in a Castle for the Common Good

Baltic Manors Festival in Skåne / Sweden on 19 Sept 2026

This festival in the southern tip of Sweden is a delightful reminder of the original function of manor houses in the Baltic Sea Region: they were large agricultural estates that supplied their entire surrounding regions with food. Culinary pleasures with regional flavour will therefore also be served on the festival weekend. They are celebrated by a whole range of local farmers, bakers and other food producers taking part in the event: alongside rich culinary delights, visitors will also find interesting information about the products and how they are made. There will also be an accompanying programme with music, entertainment, culture, children’s activities and education. The festival setting is remarkable in its own right: Svaneholm Castle played a key role in the history of this region, which is still strongly shaped by agriculture today. At the end of the 18th century, the aristocratic politician Rutger Maclean was based here and initiated far-reaching reforms for more productive farming. A visit to the museum at Svaneholm is highly recommended. A spirit of reform has defined the castle’s later history. Svaneholm, with its surrounding park and its beautiful lake, has been run by a cooperative since 1935. Today, it is also home to an excellent restaurant that reimagines typical Skåne cuisine — even outside Harvest Thanksgiving or the Baltic Manors Festival.
