Schloss Schlemmin

Castle hotel with park and restaurant

Schlemminer Castle is a neo-Gothic manor house built between 1846 and 1850 on the granite foundations of a medieval moated castle. Wall thicknesses of over one meter have been documented, and the natural stone foundations are clearly visible along the moat.

A castle hotel with a park and restaurant near the Baltic Sea coast. Schlemminer Schloss is a neo-Gothic manor house featuring numerous castle-like elements, such as battlements and a tower open to the public. In the park, on the village side, there is a moat with a bridge.

The complex is nestled within a roughly 20-hectare landscape park featuring centuries-old trees and avenues, which was originally laid out as a Baroque garden in the 18th century. At that time, the old beech and oak groves were incorporated into the grounds, which were later redesigned as an English landscape park in the 19th century. From the village, two chestnut-lined avenues, which enclose a pond, lead to a plaza in front of the moat. Several linden-lined avenues point the way to the surrounding manor houses. The spacious park is home to a variety of dendrologically interesting trees and shrubs. In spring, countless lilies of the valley, anemones, and daffodils bloom—the park is a pure delight for the senses in every season.

Major General Wilhelm Ulrich von Thun built the castle between 1846 and 1850; the architect was Eduard Knoblauch. It is documented that King Wilhelm IV stayed in Schlemmin in 1853, and the future Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm I also visited Schlemmin Castle in 1857. After being expropriated at the end of World War II, used as a military hospital, and standing vacant for a time, it was converted into a hotel following German reunification.

Following a recent renovation, Schlemmin Castle and its park have been shining in new splendor since 2022. The castle now features 35 rooms—ranging from attic suites to tower suites—a stylish castle restaurant, two stucco-decorated halls (the Angel Hall and Music Room), and several event spaces with evocative names such as the Hunting Room and Hubertus Cellar. There are suites, tower rooms, balcony rooms, and individually furnished double rooms in the attic. Guests can choose their favorite castle rooms based on their needs and preferences. Rooms for conferences, celebrations, and weddings are available. Celebrations can take place in the Salon zum Schlossgraben or the Engelssaal for up to 80 people. The rustic Hubertuskeller and the bar are ideal for small, convivial gatherings. Small groups can retreat to the café for a quiet moment. The restaurant serves international cuisine made from fresh, regional products.

The castle is nestled within a landscape park spanning over 18 hectares. Originally designed as a strictly geometric Baroque park, the park was transformed in the 19th century into a “liberated,” romantic landscape park, where the existing old tree population flourished wonderfully. “It’s like strolling through a landscape painting”—that’s how this form of European garden art is described. And that’s exactly what it feels like when you stroll through the Schlemmin Castle Park. And take note: newly settled in the castle park is a herd of peaceful Black Galloway cattle—pure nature.
