Schloss Griebenow

Baroque Castle and Historic Park

Griebenow Castle is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen and was built in 1709.

Griebenow Castle is located in the municipality of Süderholz in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.

Built in 1709, it forms part of a listed historic ensemble in the village of Griebenow, nine kilometres west of Greifswald. Together with its landscaped park, preserved estate buildings and remarkable church, the castle represents one of the region’s most significant architectural and cultural landmarks.

Since 1 May 2003, Griebenow Castle has been owned by the non-profit association Barockschloss zu Griebenow e. V. The association operates the castle as a cultural meeting place, hosting exhibitions, concerts, Easter and Christmas markets, fashion shows and painting workshops. The historic setting also provides a venue for weddings, anniversaries and family celebrations. More than 10,000 visitors come to Griebenow Castle each year.

The estate of Griebenow was founded by Eldena Abbey after 1219 and was first documented in 1248. In 1327, during the War of the Rügen Succession, a battle near Griebenow saw the forces of Greifswald defeat those of Mecklenburg. By the 14th century, the monastery had relinquished the estate, and ownership gradually passed to several feudal families. By the 15th century, the entire village of Griebenow belonged to the von Rausche family.

After the Thirty Years’ War, the von Rausche family died out and the Griebenow estate passed to the Swedish Crown. In 1648, Queen Christina of Sweden granted the estate to Gerdt Anthon von Rehnskiöld in recognition of his services to the Swedish army. He later became governor of Swedish Pomerania and curator of the University of Greifswald. Following his death in 1658, he was buried in the castle chapel, a rare 15-sided timber-framed structure that was restored in 1948.

The historic park is part of the Griebenow Castle estate, first mentioned in 1248 and protected as a monument of outstanding cultural significance. First recorded in 1706, the park today covers around 15 hectares.
