Schloss Broock

Culture & conference center in Western Pomerania

A gem of the West Pomeranian cultural landscape, left to decay for decades, now looks to the future with hope.

Broock Castle, once the social hub of the region and the largest private stud farm in Western Pomerania, will be developed into a regional conference and cultural center in the coming years. The estate, comprising the castle and Lenné Park, has been preserved almost entirely as a historical complex and has been under a single ownership for the first time since 1945.

The lowland castle, already referred to as a “Slot” (castle) in the 15th century, was first mentioned in a document in 1331 and secured the river crossing at the Tollense until the 18th century. Today’s Broock Castle was built for Major General Christan Bogislaw von Linden as a grand, late-Baroque manor house on the farmstead between 1770 and 1777. The heir, Carl von Gentzkow, established horse breeding in Broock around 1810, which under his successors, the Barons von Seckendorff, developed into the largest private stud farm in Western Pomerania, existing until 1945.

In 1841–43, Friedrich August Stüler, the “Architect to the King of Prussia,” was commissioned to remodel the castle in the so-called “castle-Gothic” style. At the same time, the celebrated landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné provided the plans for transforming the park into an English landscape garden. In the 19th century, Broock was the social hub and meeting place for the nobility of the entire region. Parforce hunts, balls, and elegant dinners took place in succession.

In 1945, the estate was expropriated; refugee families were housed in the castle, and a cooperative store, a kindergarten, a school, apartments, and the municipal office were established there. In 1974, the municipality sold the castle to VEB Kranbau Eberswalde. The plans to establish a vacation home for employees were never carried out.

In 2017, after 43 years of looting and decay, Schloss Broock GmbH & Co. KG, represented by Monika Klinkenberg and Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Klinkenberg, became the owner of the complex and breathed new life into this idyllic location in the beautiful Tollense Valley. With support from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Federal Republic of Germany—which classifies Broock as a monument of special national significance—and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, emergency stabilization of the castle ruins began in 2018. In the coming years, a supraregional cultural and conference center will be established in Broock. Concerts, festivals, and private events are already taking place in the historic riding hall, which also hosts the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

After decades without a shop or restaurant in Broock, our village store—featuring a café-bistro, beer garden, and regional products—opened in May 2023 on the edge of the estate grounds and has become very popular with our guests.
